While growing up in Wyoming, he began developing his own techniques of blending charcoal and graphite to give a photo realistic look to his drawings. J. D. uses this monochromatic medium to focus the viewer's attention to the drama of light, shadow, and texture without the added influence of color.
Since 1989 I have taught my realistic pencil drawing techniques to thousands of drawing enthusiasts all over the world.
Over this time, he has become the most respected and well known artist in his field. His charcoal and pencil drawings are praised for being life-like and his style interests viewers because it plays with their perception of reality and tells a story.JD Hillberry, one of the world's greatest realism artists using graphite pencil highlights some of his best work and shares his technique.

By the way, I share the same birthday as MC Escher - although he was born in and died in I went to school there until I went off to college in Greeley, Colorado.
